FAQ's
1. Why are you focused on looking for life?
Astrobiology (the field that we are engaged in currently) is a very new field in science. Most likely, any life we find naturally came from space (which some of our colleagues hypothesize) or through major winds that pick up life in the ocean (say from a hurricane). If we find life from space (in other words aliens!), this would be a major breakthrough in the scientific world. If we find life from the ocean, this can support the theory of how life spread during its formative years billions of years ago.
2. Where are you getting the money?
We are currently creating a Kickstarter Campaign that will hopefully give us sufficient funds. The campaign was released on July 16th, 2014 and we raised 3700 dollars, 200 dollars over our goal. We will also have sporadic fund raisers throughout 2015-2016 to raise operational funds. Most of the Kickstarter money is intended for the missions.
3. Would this be good on a college resume?
If you worked hard enough, and became a prominent member of the project, yes it would. Imagine a college applicant officer seeing on your resume that you worked in an independent, student run program. Such a program shows leadership and good science skills.
4. Who can join?
Anyone who attends Ridgefield High School in Ridgefield CT. There are no pre-requisites. However strong knowledge in biology and engineering is recommended.
5. Would this be a lot of work?
Yes and No. While we meet every Thursday, it is also expected each member works while not just in the meetings as well, but throughout the week. The busiest time is always two or three weeks before a launch. Otherwise not a lot of intensive work is required.
6. Is this a RHS Club? I cannot find it on the Club list page.
We are an out of school program and we are not a Ridgefield HS club. However we are all RHS students and therefore we only accept RHS students into the program.
7. How will I learn all of the stuff I need to know?
Great question! Since we are student operated, you will need to understand most of what we are doing. We suggest Khan Academy for such aid. While most of the work is not intensive in any subject, it is always good to have a solid base in simply physics, chemistry, biology and communication skills.
Also, when you join, you will be designated into a certain job. Each job generally has a person who is very experienced in the field, so they will help you along the way.
