Why it is Key to learn science?
In recent years, there has been a push to promote STEM in the United States, as the need for engineers is becoming ever more important. We cannot be more excited about this. However, at the Aera Project, we realize the way the recent promotion of science is playing out isn't attracting students, rather it is pushing them away.
As high school students, many of us feel the education system does not provide an accurate sense of science. While we all agree the knowledge of scientific law, and their respective formulas are key for any scientist, we consider the emphasis on being curious is lacking. Just look at most textbooks for proof. Many simply tell the student what they need to know, and never make them seriously think the golden question of 'why?'
At the Aera Project, we want to supplement the education system of the US by getting students to ask this essential question, and show the true nature of the field: the fun/exploration side. By creating interactive science programs, the Aera Project can show the intrinsic excitement of science. We intend to do this through 'DIY Weather Balloon projects' and 'How to Build your own Drone' programs.
We aim to work with local groups such as schools, clubs and other organizations, and plan to create a meaningful connection with them as we educate our community on the not only the importance of science, but the sheer fun of it.
